Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this bookIf nothing else it gets big points for an interesting premisePicture the cruelest of winters, 1908, in a remote Wisconsin townA lonely yet wealthy widow advertises in a Chicago newspaper for what he terms a "reliable wife"As a bit of background, Ralph Truitt's first wife went a bit off her nut and met with what we can only assume was an unfortunate end for she is mysteriously absent; as is her son by the Italian gardener she has imported from her homelandTruitt also loses his beloved Downs Syndrome daughter on whom the sun rises and sets in his eyesIt appears going completely mad was not that unusual of a thing during these harsh timesAfter years of self imposed solitude, denial and remorse, Truitt is finally ready to enter the land of the living.
