Review:

After a failed marriage and a stunted career, Claire Wilder sets off to find her roots. She packs her bags, fills her Mercedes with her worldly possessions, quits her job and she's off to Valentine, Oklahoma; her birth place and home of her estranged father. What begins as an intended brief stay at The Goodnight Motel becomes more than Claire could have hoped or bargained for.

Claire's arrival in Valentine seems to have the ripple effect of a pebble tossed into a pond and the eccentric residents are ill prepared for the effects this city girl will have on their lives. Vella Blain, elderly owner of the local pharmacy and soda fountain is encouraged in her online romance with Harole. Winston, a really elderly town figure has his spirits lifted by Claire's mere presence. Sherrilyn, the lost pregnant teenager with the loser, car thief boyfriend, finally finds the mother figure she has long been searching for. Finally there's the father/son duo vying for space as Claire's romantic interest at the expense of their already strained relationship.

Matlock has deftly managed to combine all these down to earth, realistic characters perfectly to create a sweet and uplifting tale. I believe the message is that sometimes what you are really looking for has been right in front of you all along. You do not need to look far for what it is that shall make you happy and whole. Matlock is the author of at least five other heartwarming stories that have all been well received by critics and readers alike. This book is just what the doctor ordered to relieve you of the unending winter doldrums. I loved it!
