Review:

Claire Shipley is an independent, striking, and successful young single mother in the United States during the 1940s. She works as a photographer for the new and extremely popular magazine Life. While assigned to a story about The Rockefeller Institute's strange new drug penicillin she stumbles upon an enticing man and a drug that is showing potential (a potential that could have saved her daughter from blood poisoning a few years previously).

Soon, World War II is upon the United States and soldiers are dying by the hundreds of blood poisoning and various infections. The government, namely military official Vannevar Bush, is extremely interested in penicillin and will invest almost anything in order for it to become a weapon of war (saving soldier's lives). Claire, because of her previous work with penicillin, is asked to do a secret photographic journal of penicillin's production, so that photos can be accessed by future generations. Her new position causes her to fall in love with the leading penicillin researcher, be swept into the throngs of war, and be faced with the realities, hopes, and fears of an ever changing world.

Lauren Belfer creates a wonderful historical fiction piece that I highly recommend. Twisted between drama, romance, and suspense it is a slow but very rewarding read.
